Hi, I’m Simon. I am a year 11 music student at Western Heights High School. In year 9 I achieved first in music and in year 10 I achieved excellence in music. I have been a student at the Rotorua Music School since 2019, originally playing guitar but I changed to bass guitar in 2020. Over the last year I have been learning trombone, and I play in the school concert and jazz bands. I am interested in theory and composition, and my goal for when I leave school is to do a bachelor's degree in jazz performance. I have had many good teachers at the Rotorua Music School, and now I would like to share my knowledge and enthusiasm with others.
Ukulele Tutor:
Elyse
Kia ora everyone,
My name is Elyse and I am the violin and ukelele teacher here at RMS.
As a teacher, my goal is to help students develop a joy in musical exploration, as well as music creation and I try to achieve this by providing engaging and fun lessons that not only cater to each students' musical interests but also focuses on developing their practical and theoretical skillsets.
Before moving to Rotorua and teaching here a year ago I was an assistant teacher at Arohanui Strings (a Wellington-based Youth Orchestra) for 3 years and am currently preparing to sit Trinity Grade 5 violin. Despite the fact I am still a student myself I have always had a sincere passion and love for music from youth that has led me to also be able to play the guitar, piano, bass, drums, steel drums, tin whistle, harmonica, kalimba + others and I would love to share this passion for music with you all!
For me, there is no greater joy than seeing a students' confidence and excitement grow for their instrument and am excited to be able to play a small part in creating their own life-long adventures with music.
Recorder Tutor:
Sam Raney
I started my musical journey very young, as many do, playing recorder - progressing into clarinet then saxophone.
I was heavily involved with various bands and groups run through Avondale College in Auckland, including the Jazz band, Big Band and Funk Band that we toured and competed in competitions with.
I graduated from the Jazz Music Program at Auckland University with a Degree in Performing Arts Jazz.
After several years teaching around various schools in Auckland, I’m now in Rotorua and back into teaching and doing something I really enjoy.

Drums Tutor:
Cheyla Samuels
Cheyla Samuels, born in Rotorua raised in Mohaka, is currently a Learning assistant, Music/band teacher and choir teacher at Mokoia intermediate. She also tutors from home and has started to establish a drum renting business to cater to the high numbers of families requesting services due to there not being many places to rent drums for her students in the Bay of Plenty. She has been a passionate music tutor for over 12 years, specialising in mainly drums and vocals, but also plays guitar bass and saxophone.
She has graduated with a Diploma in Contemporary performance way back in 2014 and is finally looking to further her studies in the near future, now that she is songwriting again and in demand to teach at a higher level.
“My main goal is always to help the students gain confidence in themselves and establish an understanding of practicing in the more effective ways as to get the best out of their time. It takes away a lot of anxiety that blocks their minds and creates a safe and open space ideal for learning and personal development”.
Flute Tutor:
Leanne Harper Lambert
Leanne started playing flute when she was 9 years old and by age 15 had achieved the LTCL Performance Diploma from Trinity College London. At just 17 years of age she was accepted to the Bachelor of Music degree at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Over the years she has taught flute to hundreds of students in New Zealand, Australia and England. She loves guiding students to develop solid technical skills so that they can enjoy a lifelong love of making music and creative self expression. Being part of the collective sound of orchestras, symphonic bands, wind quintets and flute groups has been the source of some of her greatest joys in life.
The average 9-10 year old is a good size to begin flute, they generally are able to hold the instrument and successfully develop the necessary breath control. But Leanne’s eldest student was 76 when she started as a beginner and went on to achieve a Grade 8 Certificate.
Leanne has the ability to work with all ages and all levels of musical experience, and loves all types of music… if you have a favourite song you want to learn to play on flute, Leanne is willing and able to help you achieve your dream.
Flute lessons are available on Thursdays at the Rotorua Music School – fill in the enrolment form on the website to register. Flutes are also available for hire from RMS with a returned hire form.
